Breeding

The goal of any responsible breeder, including Wind Wagon Retrievers, is to “Breed to Improve.” Before we breed, we screen our females for heritable diseases and use only those dogs that have received all appropriate OFFA (hips and/or elbows) and CERF (eye) clearances. We also select our breeding stock based on proven performance in the field, pedigree, temperament, soundness, and conformation. We research each stud to ensure that the pairing will complement one another and produce desired traits including a quality hunting retriever and family companion.

Our pups are hand whelped and socialized by our family from the moment of birth until delivery to the new owners. Pups are usually weaned by their mothers at four to six weeks. Our veterinarian removes the dewclaws and performs an initial vet check at one to three days old and a repeat vet check at six weeks of age. We de-worm pups at four, six, and eight weeks and administer the first round of puppy shots at six weeks. This is typically a combination five-way vaccine for Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus, Hepatitis, and Parainfluenza.

We want to ensure that each puppy goes to an owner who will provide it with the same love and devotion for life that we have provided to our dogs. We carefully screen and evaluate each person interested in getting a puppy from Wind Wagon Retrievers.

Your puppy will be ready to be picked up or shipped at eight weeks or older. Your puppy packet will include a record of care along with AKC registration papers, a copy of the parental pedigree, a bill of sale and a health guarantee. These items are given to the new owners upon pick up or shipping of the puppy. We also provide new "parents" with a small amount of the puppy's food to ensure a smooth transition to its new home. We feed and recommend Black Gold Signature Series Ultimate Puppy brand dog food. This product can be purchased from us or purchased at many local retailers and feed stores.
